Learning Communities
Learning Communities are small-group classes led by two staff mentors. The primary goal is to promote health and wellness, in which students learn social-emotional and executive functioning skills through a lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Through lessons, readings, and discussions (both with classmates and guest speakers), they begin with self-discovery and evolve towards the goal of being lifelong, self-directed learners who are able to efficiently organize their work and life, collaborate productively with people of all types, and engage in long-term, meaningful work.
Students will:
- Understand themselves and their learning style.
- Cultivate empathy and cultural competencies, make true friends, and promote healthy relationships with a broad spectrum of others. For instance, students practice the skills to have courageous conversations when fairness is at stake.
- Develop a bias for action and the executive functioning skills to achieve their goals and realize impactful projects.
Students work with a staff mentor who guides them on their high school journey via regular 1-on-1 check-ins. With support from their mentor, students tailor their course selections, projects, and experiences to their interests and architect a portfolio that represents their authentic academic journey.
